Department of Methodology
The Department of Methodology of the Faculty of Medicine carries out classes for second and fifth year medical students and for PhD students. The classes conducted in the Department explain to future doctors and young scientists the importance of accurate scientific data on the basis of which therapeutic procedures are developed. How reliable are data from studies conducted using different methodologies? Does each published report have equal cognitive value? How can false conclusions be drawn? To this end, during the classes we discuss the principles of proper planning and conducting research and the correct interpretation of results. Subsequent stages of research that precede the implementation of new medicinal products into medical practice are presented. In the context of this information, we teach critical analysis of scientific papers. We present selected issues concerning the ethics of preclinical research. We also teach the basics of correct, synthetic presentation of research results. The conclusion of the course is the preparation of an abstract and a short presentation discussing the scientific project. Issues related to the protection of intellectual property are the subject of lectures for 5th year students of medicine.
The scientific activity in the Department is based on basic and preclinical research described in the Research section. The works of the team are carried out with active participation of students - members of the Student Scientific Club operating at the Department. The laboratory of the Department is located in the building of the Centre for Preclinical Research. In the recent evaluation of scientific effectiveness of "small" (i.e. employing < 5 persons) scientific and didactic units of the Faculty of Medicine, our Department takes 2nd place, and in the scale of the whole university - 4th place.
- In the 2020/2021 student survey evaluating classes and the teachers who teach them, Dr. Kacper Pełka, from our Department, is one of the 10 highest rated teachers in the Faculty of Medicine
